Zhejiang province

Geographical Location

Zhejiang is located in the southern part of the Yangtze River Delta on the southeast coast of China.
It lies between 27o12' and 31o31' north latitude and 118o00 and 123o 00' east longitude. It faces the East China Sea on the east and neighbors Fujian on the south. With an extensive hinterland in the rear, it shares borders with Jiangxi and Anhui on the west and Shanghai, the country's largest city, and Jiangsu on the north.

 

Comprehensive Strength

In 2005, the GDP of Zhejiang province was 1336.5 billion RMB, an increase of 12.4% over the previous year calculated at comparable prices. As one of the most economically vibrant and developed provinces, Zhejiang ranked the fourth in China in terms of overall economic aggregate. The added value from the primary, secondary and tertiary industries were 87.3 billion RMB, 714.7 billion RMB and 534.5 billion RMB, up by 1.6%, 12.3% and 14.9% respectively. The ratio of the three industries was changed from 7.0/53.6/39.4 of the previous year to 6.5/53.5/40 respectively. The per capita GDP of the province was 27552 RMB, up by 10.8% over the previous year.

Agriculture

In 2005, the structural adjustment of agriculture in the whole province continued, and the agricultural production developed stably. The proportion between grain crops and cash crops changed from 52.4:47.6 to 53.2:46.8. The total grain output was 8.147 million tons, a decrease of 2.4 % over the previous year. The total aquatic product output was 4.838 million tons, a decrease of 2.0 %. The output of meat, eggs and milk continued to increase.


Industry

In 2005, the industry in the whole province continued to grow rapidly. The industrial added value reached 634.3 billion RMB, with an increase of 12.9 %, among which the added value in large-scale industries amounted to 490.5 billion RMB, with an increase of 18.1%.

Light textile is one of the mainstay industries in Zhejiang province, and its output and the capacity to earn foreign exchange through exports rank the first in China. The markets specializing in textile products cover the whole range of textile product line and exert strong and far-reaching radiation effects. Zhejiang province has become the textile logistics center in China. Its Light Textile City of China and the Cocoon and Silk Market of China are specialized markets, which are very influential in China.

The machinery industry is the number one industry in the whole province. Focusing on the construction of an advanced manufacturing industrial base, its output value, sales income and tax payment rank the third in the machinery industries in China. The air separation equipment, the special industry steam turbines, the electric dust catchers, pneumatic ash devices and other products are up to international advanced level and in leading positions in China thanks to their technological superiority.

Zhejiang's building material industry produces a complete category of building products. The industry of important raw materials and products, such as the traditional building materials and products, nonmetal minerals and deep processing and inorganic nonmetals develop stably. New materials are being developed rapidly.

In chemical industry, Zhejiang Province has the country's largest base of international crude oil processing, product oil export and fluorine chemical industry production. The productivity and output of the glyphosate insecticides and dyes rank the first in Asia. The output of its fine chemical industry is the highest in China. Thus a distinctive modern chemical industry system, with its diverse and comprehensive categories, has been basically formed.

In the electronic and information industry, Zhejiang Province implemented the construction of "a strong information province", giving priority to software development and the integrated circuit industry, promoting the development of "a digital Zhejiang" and "an information industry base around Hangzhou-Bay¡±.

In the medicine industry, Zhejiang Province is strong in the scientific research, technological development and manufacturing of pharmaceutical products, omplete with a sound medicine sales network. The main economic indexes, such as the total medicine output value, export delivery value, and profits, remain in the leading positions in China.



The Tertiary Industry

The investment in real estate continued to grow rapidly. The investment in the real estate development was 145.45 billion RMB in 2005, with an increase of 12.3% over the previous year.

The domestic trade and the market sales of the consumption goods increased steadily. The total retail sales of social consumption goods reached 463.2 billion RMB 2005, with an increase of 14.2% over the previous year, and up by 13.2% if the price factor is taken into consideration. Among them, the retail sales of the urban consumption goods amounted to 304.7 billion RMB with an increase of 15.2%. The retail sales volume of the wholesale and retail trade reached 402.1 billion RMB, with an increase of 14.1%. The retail sales of the catering trade was 53.32 billion RMB, with an increase of 17.8%. The retail sales volume of other trades reached 7.77 billion RMB, with an increase of 0.1%. In the sales of the wholesale and retail trade above quota, the retail sales volume of automobiles and the communication equipments increased by 9.7% and 9.1% respectively.

In tourism, Zhejiang received 127.58 million person-times of domestic tourists, with an increase of 20.4% over the previous year. The income from domestic tourism was 124.0 billion RMB, with an increase of 22.4%. There were 3.48 million person-times of overseas tourists, with an increase of 25.8%, among which 2.329 million were from other countries, with an increase of 31.1%, and 1.151 million were from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, with an increase of 16.2%. The foreign exchange income from international tourism was US$ 1.72 billion, with an increase of 32.0%. The total income from both domestic and international tourism was 137.88 billion RMB in 2005, with an increase of 23.0%.
